Not all juices are made the same
So why do I love working with Smash? This company was started on the principle that healthy, wholesome food should taste good, be readily available and affordable, and the company continues to strive for an honest menu. As a team, we work together to find all natural ingredients with a purpose, meaning they taste amazing and they contribute to our overall health. Then we work to create magic in a bowl or bottle to create a dish full of flavor without destroying the disease fighting nutrients.
A great example of Smash’s dedication to promoting good health one meal at a time starts with the fresh squeezed juices. As a dietitian, I am usually the first to warn my clients of the empty calories that can come from juices. However, Smash juices are not just any juice! Firstly, most companies will use apple juice as the first and main ingredient, yet advertise the beverage as being loaded with berries and veggies. Smash juices are designed with quality in mind, so what you see on the label is what you get!
The second reason why I am so impressed by these juices is they are all cold-pressed and raw. Cold-pressed juices use a hydraulic press to squeeze out the juices, which results in less heat production compared to the more commonly used centrifugal juice extractors. We also prevent additional heat exposure by leaving the juice unpasteurized, or “raw”. By reducing the heat production during processing, we are significantly reducing the amount of essential nutrients and phytochemicals that are lost compared with industry standard juice extraction. FYI: it is the phytochemicals that can help reduce the risks for chronic diseases, such as heart disease and certain cancers, and these phytochemicals are also contributing to the vibrant colors and fresh flavors in the juice!
My last bragging point on the Smash juices is the pulp! After the juice is extracted the pulp is added back to the juice to create a smooth (not chunky or chewy) beverage that help keeps us fuller longer. Most healthy adults are consuming about half of the recommended amount of fiber daily, but we know that it helps with maintaining a healthy body weight, keeps us regular and can help lower blood cholesterol. Getting enough fiber can be hard if we are not getting enough plants in our diet, so the Smash juice is a quick, easy and tasty way to get our fiber.

A final nutrition tip: This brings me back to encouraging you to embrace being imperfect. By having an “imperfectionist” mentality you are less likely to fall into the “all-or-nothing” mentality, and you find it easier to get back on track when there are slip ups in a new lifestyle change. Your diet will not always be perfect, sometimes far from it. That is okay! If you just started a new job with odd hours, you went back to school or your kids have started a new time for soccer practice, whatever it is, everyone goes through times where they are not eating the way they want or exercising as much as they use to. What we should strive to do in these times is make smarter choices and strive to create new habits that fit with the new obstacle (time, budget, etc.) that is in the way of healthy lifestyle choices. So again, if you go out to eat, pick foods that have purpose not just calories. Pick foods that will nourish your body, food that will provide you with fiber, lean protein, healthy fats and essential vitamins and minerals. Small lifestyle changes like this can have a big impact on your health and are more likely to last, it just starts with one small step to a healthier you!
